Be great at storytelling. Tell as many stories as you can. Read news stories and then retell them to your audience. The best and most widely recognized podcasts today are successful because of how well the hosts and producers tell a story. Some stories don’t even need an ending (that’s how ‘Serial’ got started).

Don’t read from a script. Podcasts are about being authentic and genuine. Listeners cannot form a connection with the host if the host is coming off like a robot reciting dictation.

It’s okay to “flub”.  Don’t worry if a block or segment of the episode wasn’t perfect, or that you tripped up on a syllable, or if there was a slight pause. You don’t have to fix that in editing. It actually helps in making you authentic. Over time, your audience will relate to you - the personality, not how well you say words.

Listen to other podcasts. The more variety of podcasts that you hear, the more comfortable you will be in producing your own podcasts.
